Report from Martin

Hurricane New Year Tournament spurs “No Heel Aqeel” to yet another astounding victory

Week 1 of Lent Term. No essays, no work, free pool tables at Hurricanes Kings Cross = Pool tournament!!! With a massive 10 people participating (no shit, worst participation ever, but thanks to those who actually came though), we decided to once again play groups with 2 groups of five players each and the top two go through to the semi-finals. Aqeel and Alpesh had the honour of battling it out with Phil and Sahil to take the top 2 spots in their group, with the shock victory of Alpesh over Aqeel in the group stages, but he still was not able to clinch first place.

In the second group things were a little tougher with Martin beating Will in his group battle 3-2 but then losing to Alvin 3-2 in the very next match. Given my loss to newcomer Dershan that put me on even points with Alvin, meaning he went through as he beat me. Will reigned supreme in the group sending him to the play-off with Alpesh.

Everyone could see what was coming. Alpesh advances easily to 4-0 and is on the final balls again, but something inexplicable happens again. 4-0 becomes 4-1. 4-2, 4-3, 4-4, 4-5… http://flipvine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/4139.jpg

Pretty intense work there from Will, thereby getting to his second final in as many 8ball tournaments. Aqeel has a little trouble in beating Alvin, but came back from 1-3 to take the win 5-3 as Alvin seemed to have something in his throat as he started choking.

The final I did not have a chance to see but rumor has it Aqeel once again took home the victory. Awesome result, and it’s a shame we won’t have the benefit of him at Great Yarmouth, but what can you do eh? Fate is conspiring against the pool club again.

Quote of the tournament:

As Alpesh is on a final black in one of his frames against Will …

Aq: Great Yarmouth is on the South Coast so not too far from here
Phil: It’s on the East Coast isn’t it?
Aq: I thought it was in the South
Mart: It think you’ve got Great Yarmouth confused with her unknown namesake Mediocre Yarmouth
Alp: Could both of you please shut up please???
